Mammography

Mammography is the most accurate technique available for the early detection of a variety of breast diseases, including breast cancer. Mammography is a lowdose X-ray examination that can detect breast cancer up to two years before it is large enough to be felt.

Breast MRI

MRI of the breast is a sophisticated diagnostic procedure, administered by Florida Hospital Flagler’s staff of highly trained and experienced radiologists and technologists, using state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment. The Breast MRI may provide information not seen on conventional films. The study involves no radiation and is often
performed without the use of compression as in mammography of the breast. MRI is a noninvasive procedure that creates comprehensive images of the entire breast, chest wall, and surrounding tissues. The end result of the study
produces remarkably clear pictures of the breast tissue.

Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy

When a lump or abnormality of the breast tissue has been detected, your physician will conduct a biopsy. This is the standard way to accurately determine if the lump is cancerous. At the Women's Health Center, we offer the minimally invasive breast biopsy option for our patients. The breast biopsy can be safely performed by using a MRI/Ultrasound Guided Vacuum-Assisted Core Biopsy or a breast needle. The benefits of the MRI/Ultrasound Guided Vacuum-Assisted Core Biopsy include:

  • • single small incision
  • • no stitches required
  • • use of local anesthetic
  • • resume daily activities the same day

The procedure is highly accurate and will help your physician diagnose a variety of breast abnormalities, from those that you can feel to those you cannot.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a simple, pain-free diagnostic tool that uses sound waves, not radiation to produce an image.

  • Breast ultrasound is used to distinguish solid or fluid-filled areas within the breast, providing additional information to your physician.
  • Ultrasound guided breast core biopsy is available at a physician’s discretion, bypassing the need to go into the operating room for a biopsy.
  • Pelvic ultrasound helps us identify ovarian cysts and solid masses, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, abscesses of the pelvic cavity, pelvic inflammatory disease and pregnancy.
  • Full-service ultrasound is available for thyroid, abdominal and vascular (carotids and arterial Doppler) studies. It also can be used to identify blood clots in the legs.
  • Obstetric Ultrasound is the use of ultrasound scans in pregnancy. The ultrasound scan is a safe, noninvasive, accurate and cost-effective investigation in the fetus. It has progressively become an indispensable obstetric tool and plays an important role in the care of every pregnant woman.

Bone Densitometry

Bone densitometry (DEXA) is the leading diagnostic tool for osteoporosis, a debilitating disease in which progressive bone loss causes increased risk of fracture. Our bone densitometers can accurately measure bone mass and assess fracture risk. Specialized tests called bone density tests can measure bone density in various sites of the body. A bone density test can:

  • Detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs.
  • • Predict your chances of fracturing in the future.
  • • Determine rate of bone loss and monitor response to treatment.

It is recommended that women who are 65 and older should be tested, regardless of risk factors. Post-menopausal women who have one or more risk factors for osteoporotic fracture (beside menopause) and all postmenopausal women who have a fracture should be tested. Early diagnosis is key to establishing a treatment regimen to ward off further bone deterioration.
