What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the result of an abnormal accumulation of fluid causing swelling of a body part most often the extremities. It can also occur in the face, neck, abdomen or genitals. It affects both men and women and all ages from infants to seniors.
Diagnosis
Lymphedema can be diagnosed as primary or secondary lymphedema and if identified promptly and treatment begins early, patients can prevent further complications and have a productive life with little or no lifestyle restrictions. Unfortunately, this condition is not well known or understood by the patients and the medical community. This long neglected condition can and must be treated.
Treatment
Complete Decongestive Therapy known as CDT is a technique used in our clinic for the treatment of lymphedema. This technique includes:
- Manual drainage of fluid.
- Compression bandaging for swellingprevention and reduction.
- Therapeutic exercises.
- Patient education about skin and nail care.
- Patient and caregiver education regarding self care, lymphedema and its treatment.
- Education regarding community resources.
