On Tuesday, November 11th, Florida Hospital HospiceCare hosted a special ceremony at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House – a wedding! HospiceCare patient Marcia Muller was married to Paul Muller. Friends, family members and HospiceCare staff gathered to support Marcia and Paul in their loving union.
“We had lots of help making this event happen,” said the new groom. “The Clerk of the Court came to us to notarize everything and make it official. I know they didn’t have to do that, but we really appreciated it.”
Paul and Marcia were actually married from 1975 to 1993, but separated for three years. In 1996, they reunited and have been together ever since. Over the years, the Mullers thought about remarrying, but a phone call to their priest revealed that the Catholic Church did not recognize their separation and still saw them as married, so they never saw the need to get remarried.
“In light of Marcia’s circumstances, we wanted to do it right and get remarried,” Paul said. “I’m so glad God has given her back to me.”
Years and years ago, Paul and Marcia were initially set-up by Paul’s mother. They grew up in New Jersey; Paul lived one town over from Marcia and his father coached Marcia’s sister’s children in little league.
“On Christmas Eve, he first called me and asked me on a date,” Marcia said.
The couple moved to Port Orange where Paul was a Volusia County Sherriff’s Deputy. Approximately eight years ago, they moved to Palm Coast for more family support – Paul’s mother and sister both live in Flagler County.
“Everyone here at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House have been so wonderful to us. Debbie, our case worker, has gone above and beyond for us,” Paul said. “I just love Marcia and am glad we were given the opportunity to set our marriage right.”
About Florida Hospital HospiceCare
Florida Hospital HospiceCare, the community’s most comprehensive hospice, provides care to residents of Volusia and Flagler Counties in their own home, wherever that may be – or ours. Florida Hospital HospiceCare offers medical, emotional and spiritual support to patients and their caregivers at a time when curative treatment is no longer appropriate or possible.
Florida Hospital HospiceCare opened the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, an inpatient facility located behind Florida Hospital Flagler, in April 2007. Stuart F. Meyer, former President and CEO of the St. Louis Cardinals, retired in1996 to Palm Coast and unfortunately developed cancer, which took his life in 2001. Before he died, Stuart dreamed of a Hospice House in Flagler County where those without family and support could receive acute hospice care services. During the facility’s first year, more than 215 patients received inpatient hospice care. This number demonstrates the great need within the community and Florida Hospital HospiceCare is proud to be able to serve these patients in their time of need.
Florida Hospital HospiceCare also opened an 12-bed acute inpatient care unit inside Florida Hospital Oceanside in March 2007. Like the services provided at Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, hospice patients who need more involved care than what is possible in their own home get the help they need here.
