As part of the National Disability Mentoring Day, the Flagler Technical Institute brought 12 students ranging from 16 to 22 years old to Florida Hospital Flagler to shadow volunteers in various hospital departments on Wednesday, October 20.
National Disability Mentoring Day is a large-scale national effort designed to promote career development for students and job seekers with disabilities through hands-on career exploration and on-site job shadowing.
Shellsea Smith, 18, chose to spend her time at Florida Hospital Flagler in the Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Library. The Library is open to cancer patients and their families, as well as community members, and offers an extensive collection of books, brochures, articles and videotapes about cancer. Also, registered cancer patients are able to receive wigs, head coverings, mastectomy bras and prostheses along with information on current American Cancer Society programs, all free of charge.
“I’ve been to the hospital so many times and I had no idea this was even here,” Smith said.
Her great-grandfather died of cancer and she wanted to be able to help others battling this terrible disease.
“I have such a big heart and want to be able to help people with cancer,” she said.
