Four children who were hurt in a tragic crash in Flagler County on Sunday night are still recovering, but the kindness of some hospital workers is making their recovery a little easier.

Five of the children's family members were killed in an accident on Interstate 95. Two of the children who survived the crash were released from Florida Hospital Flagler on Monday. Before the two were released, the staff at the hospital got together to buy toys and donate money to the family.

"Once the word started getting out, people were coming out of the woodwork," hospital chaplain Robert Nickell said.

Nickell said workers at the hospital quickly got together to help the kids who are now left without their parents. Nickell sent a memo out to his co-workers that read, "Two of the little ones are here in our hospital and they are in need of support."

The support came quickly as the overnight emergency staff purchased toys, gestures that the staff hoped would lighten the burden for the children.

"I saw one of the little ones wake up this morning and open a gift that was sitting by his side," Nickell said.

The hospital staff didn't stop with a couple of toys for the kids, Nickell said support continued to come in throughout the day.

"I'd just be walking around and people would hand me envelopes full of money," Nickell said. "I'd take it back in there and give to the family, just letting them know we care for them."
