Imaging or Radiology is the branch of medicine that uses a variety of imaging tools in the diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease, and at Florida Hospital Flagler Imaging Services, we are committed to changing the way you experience the diagnostic process of health care. We feel the key to helping patients overcome their anxiety and discomfort is to create a healing environment that replaces traditional settings. Our spa-like waiting room with a large flat-screen television and beautifully painted murals puts our patients at ease while in our care. Our expertly trained staff are accredited by the American College of Radiology and care for our patients emotionally, as well as technically, and will do everything to ensure an effortless and comfortable imaging experience for you.
We perform the following tests:
Computerized Tomography (CT) Scanner
CT or CAT scan is the common term used to describe a radiological test known as computerized tomography. The CT scan can see inside the brain and other parts of the body, into areas that cannot be see during regular X-ray examinations. The CT scanner takes pictures of cross sections, or slices of the human body. At Florida Hospital Flagler, we have two CT scanners including a new GE 16 slice scanner, to fully accommodate our busy outpatient schedule, allowing us to focus on providing quality care in a timely manner.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to allow radiologists to explore the inner workings of the human body without using potentially harmful ionizing radiation. Florida Hospital Flagler now has Breast MRI capabilities. Please see Women's Health Center for more information.
Position Emission Tomography (PET) Scanning
The PET scan produces vivid pictures of the body's metabolic activity and can detect tumors months before they show up on standard imaging tests. Unlike computerized tomography (CT) scanning or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), PET demonstrates cell function rather than anatomy. Traditional scanning can detect tumors of 1 ½ centimeters and larger. The PET scan detects tumors as small as six millimeters.
Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine is a branch of medicine and medical imaging that uses the nuclear properties of matter in diagnosis and therapy. In diagnosis, radioactive substances are administered to patients and the radiation emitted is measured. The majority of these diagnostic tests involve the formation of an image using a gamma camera. Other diagnostic tests use probes to acquire measurements from parts of the body, or counters for the measurement of samples taken from the patient. In therapy, radiopharmaceuticals are administered to treat disease or provide pain relief.
Among the nuclear studies we perform at Florida Hospital Flagler are:
- Liver
- Bone
- Pulmonary
- Cardiac
- Gallbladder
- Thyroid
- Whole Body Bone
- Cancer
- Infection
X-Ray & Fluoroscopy
X-rays allow physicians to perform a painless, quick evaluation, often detecting diseases in the early stages when the chance for recovery is improved. Dense structures, such as bone, absorb the most radiation and appear white on the image. Air will be black and other structures will be shades of gray, depending on density.
Fluoroscopy is a form of diagnostic radiology that enables the radiologist to visualize the organ or area of concern via X-ray. A contrast agent is introduced to the body via injection, swallowing or an enema, and it allows the image to be viewed clearly on a television monitor live.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a simple, pain-free diagnostic tool that uses sound waves, not radiation, to produce an image. The test can be used for many purposes including evaluation of the heart and blood vessels, abdominal organs, such as the gallbladder and kidneys, female pelvic organs, and the mother and baby during pregnancy. Please see Women's Health Center for more information.

The Women's Health Center is designed to meet the full continuum of women's medical needs to help every woman attain her highest health potential. We recognize that each woman is unique and we offer a wide variety of health care services designed to meet the special needs of all women. The Women's Health Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and offers comprehensive services for your convenience. They include:
- Mammography
- MR Breast Imaging
- Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy
- DEXA Bone Densitometry
- Ultrasound
Mammography
Mammography is the most accurate technique available for the early detection of a variety of breast diseases, including breast cancer. Mammography is a low-dose X-ray examination that can detect breast cancer up to two years before it is large enough to be felt.
MR Breast Imaging
A MRI of the breast is a highly sophisticated diagnostic procedure, administered by Florida Hospital Flagler's staff of highly trained and experienced radiologists and technologists, using state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment. The Breast MRI may provide information not seen on conventional films. The study involves no radiation and is often performed without the use of compression as in mammography of the breast. MRI is a non-invasive procedure that creates comprehensive images of the entire breast, chest wall, and surrounding tissues. The end result of the study produces remarkably clear pictures of the breast tissue.
Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy
When a lump or abnormality of the breast tissue has been detected, your physician will conduct a biopsy. This is the standard way to accurately determine if the lump is cancerous. At the Women's Health Center, we offer the minimally invasive breast biopsy option for our patients. The breast biopsy can be safely performed by using a Vacuum-Assisted Core Biopsy, stereotactic technique (a special kind of mammogram), ultrasound guidance, or Mammotome. All of the procedures can be performed on a same day/outpatient basis. The benefits include:
- Single small incision
- No stitches required
- Use of a local anesthetic
- Resume daily activities the same day
The procedure is highly accurate and will help your physician diagnose a variety of breast abnormalities.
DEXA Bone Densitometry
DEXA Bone Densitometry is the leading diagnostic tool for osteoporosis, a debilitating disease in which progressive bone loss causes an increased risk of fracture. Florida Hospital Flagler's bone densitometers can accurately measure bone mass and assess fracture risk.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a simple, pain-free diagnostic tool that uses sound waves, not radiation, to produce an image.
- Breast Ultrasound is used to distinguish solid or fluid-filled areas within the breast, providing additional information to your physician.
- Pelvic Ultrasound helps identify ovarian cysts and solid masses, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, abscesses of the pelvic cavity, pelvic inflammatory disease and pregnancy.
- Full-service ultrasound is available for thyroid, abdominal and vascular (carotids and arterial Doppler) studies.

Florida Hospital Flagler Radiation Oncologists, Dr. Alvaro Alvarez-Farinetti and Dr. Ronald Krochak along with our team of clinical specialists provide a variety of cutting-edge radiation therapies.
Treatment Options
External Radiation Therapy
External Radiation Therapy uses the linear accelerator, which directs the radiation at specific areas of a patient's body. Radiation is an effective cancer treatment because it has the capacity to damage rapidly growing cancer cells.
3-D Conformal Therapy
The advent of 3-D Conformal Therapy expanded the precision in which radiation may be administered. By using advanced computer graphics, CT scans and algorithms to precisely generate a visual, three-dimensional image of the tumor site, the radiation oncologist is able to determine the best means of delivering radiation within the confines of a tumor.
IMRT
The newest form of external radiation therapy is Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). It is a highly sophisticated, computerized method of accurately pinpointing tumors with radiation. It allows the maximum radiation dosage while sparing damage to the surrounding tissues and organs. This allows patients to complete their course of treatment with less acute side effects. The Cancer Care Center is the only facility in East Volusia or Flagler County to offer this treatment option to patients. IMRT can be used to treat the following sites, when appropriate:
- Prostate
- Breast
- Spine
- Lung
- Head & Neck
IGRT
Image Guided Radiation Treatment (IGRT) is the latest in external beam radiation where two robotically controlled "arms" capture CT, fluoroscopic and X-Ray images on a daily basis, pinpointing the position of the cancer tumors just prior to treatment. Some tumors can move during the course of treatment, and IGRT combined with IMRT affords increased precision which allows for higher doses of radiation - ultimately leading to higher cure rates.
Respiratory Gating
Respiratory Gating with IGRT synchronizes the delivery of radiation with the patient's own respiratory cycle. With each breath, organs in the chest and upper abdomen move. A tumor in a person's lung, liver, or breast may move within a two-inch range between inhalation and exhalation, which means that when doctors attack the tumor with external radiation, they must treat healthy tissue as well as the tumor if the radiation beam is on during the entire respiratory cycle. With Respiratory Gating, oncologists are able to minimize the dose of radiation delivered to normal tissue while continuing to treat all of disease.
Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is a treatment option for cancer in its earlier stages and is used when the cancer is confined to a specific site. The procedure involves implanting tiny pellets containing radioactive materials directly into the middle of the cancer where they give off radiation.
Prostate Seed Implants
Prostate seed implants are tiny radioactive pellets - smaller than a grain of rice - that are used as treatment for prostate cancer. There is no need for a surgical incision. Instead, the radioactive seeds are contained in thin needles that are passed through the skin to the affected areas.
